Quick answer
Five minutes at the rental shop can save you thousands of baht. Use this checklist every time you rent, with every shop, however friendly they seem.
Before you arrive
Sort the paperwork first so you are not tempted to skip checks later.
- Carry your original home license and an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category
- Confirm your travel insurance covers scooters and your license class
- Have a phone with a charged battery, a data connection and offline maps
Inspect the bike
Do this in daylight, with the shop owner present.
- Film a slow walk-around video, including both sides, the underside, mirrors and the dashboard
- Photograph every existing scratch, crack and dent next to a clear timestamp
- Check front and rear brakes, headlight, brake light, indicators and horn
- Look at tyre tread and pressure; bald tyres are dangerous in the rain
- Check the fuel level and note it, and ask what fuel the bike takes
- Make sure the seat locks and the under-seat storage opens
Agree the terms
Anything not written down is hard to prove later.
- Daily price, rental period and what time you must return the bike
- Deposit amount and how it is returned; avoid leaving your original passport
- What the damage policy covers and the maximum you pay
- Whether a helmet is included, and that it fits you properly
- A shop phone number or chat contact for breakdowns
At return
Return the bike with the agreed fuel level, in daylight, and ask the owner to confirm in writing that everything is fine. Keep your photos until your deposit is back in your hand.

FAQ
How long should a bike inspection take?
About five minutes. Film the bike, test the brakes and lights, and confirm the price and deposit before you pay.
What should I do if the shop refuses to let me inspect the bike?
Walk away. Reputable shops expect you to check the bike and will let you take photos.
